Behind the Scenes: the making of a mystery specimen

Isn't it sometimes fun to peek over someone's shoulder as they make something?

So hey, come on and peek as i make a "mystery specimen"! This quicktime video let's you watch a little weirdo come into existence! This glow-in-the-dark creature is one of an ongoing series and is scheduled to be released to the general public this Wed. Dec. 5, 2018 ... BUT as a Diamond Member you get first dibs on acquiring this dude (or another specimen) for your collection a day before everyone else. So what's the deal with these specimens anyway. Why do i make these kinds of odd creatures?

i found this blob that i made when i was 10

They go waaaay back actually. I started creating with clay when i was 8 (earthen kiln-fired clay at that time) and one of the first things i started making were things i just called "blobs". Yup, exactly what you'd expect them to be.

Once i started working with polymer clay about 20 years ago, the 'blobs' became ghoulies. Still blobs of clay with a personality, but now out of a glow-in-the-dark mixture.

The Mystery Specimens evolved when I got some large, fat test tubes and wanted to make a bit more "fully evolved" ghoulie series, and since they were going to live in the test tubes, it just seemed right to call them "specimens". Yeah, i know. i'm a weirdo.

This first batch was a "mystery" because you didn't know which one you were going to get. In fact, I only showed a picture of one of them and you took your chances! they i revealed all these guys after I had gotten all the "yes please, here's my money" responses. But, it's kinda nifty to get a mystery thing, don't you think? It's kind of exciting. You'll get the chance to buy one as a sight-unseen mystery specimen when the whole collection is released for you Diamond members to view and purchase, starting at noon (pst) on Wed. Dec. 3. So why do i make such odd things sometimes ... it's a mystery!
